waking up to the truth

I believe it was Winston Churchill who remarked, "Men stumble over the truth from time to time, but most pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing happened."

I am an avid collector of quotes, and I think this one came to mind today when I forwarded the website www.gasresources.net to family and friends, who in return told me that they forwarded the site to their friends. By the way, the website is very informative on scientific research on the abiotic (that is, oil not formed from dinosaurs) origins of our natural resources. However, I am afraid that even if people go through the lengthy economic, political, and scientific ramifications of the research, what good will it do? I really hope this proves to be more than just a passing interest as people go back to watching inane television programs and spending long days working to pay for the cable bills.

Did you really think dinosaurs committed suicide en masse and buried themselves in layers of hot lava? Did millions of generations of forests die in immediate succession and form the carbon needed to create such a tremendous, overflowing amount of oil? I'm glad we all paid attention in elementary school, but it's time to move on and question the validity of what we are being spoonfed. Don't take my word for it. All I am really writing on this website is little musings about my day, random thoughts and, lately, frustrations.

Although I am increasingly frustrated and a bit pessimistic about what can be done to change things, I do get little sips of hope every now and then. I believe that as human beings we are inherently good and loving by nature. We are so trusting, especially as children. We are so trusting we are not even aware that we are being majorly duped. More optimism is inside me as well, I just need some time to refresh and reconnect before I continue my work to break through shells of understanding.

Lineage

Sorridi e spera! Io son l'amore!
Tutto intorno è sangue e fango?
Io son divino! Io son l'oblio!
Io sono il dio che sovra il mondo
scendo da l'empireo, fa della terra
un ciel! Ah!
Io son l'amore, io son l'amor, l'amor

by Maria Callas for the 1896 opera, Andrea Chénier

Simply one of the most solid thematic performances of the 90s. What is stigma in sight of death, more importantly, of life?

Stay true.

Stella, please...

What are some of the important life questions we would like to answer? Like, what does Hegel and Bette Midler have in common? Lively and original, this book takes a humorous approach to philosophy, existentialism to rationalism, or vice versa - corniness and fascination at the same time.

Excerpt:

In a section on Aristotle contrasting between "essential" and "accidental" properties, Cathcar and Klein offer this illustrative joke:

When Thompson hit 70, he decided to change his lifestyle completely so he could live longer. He went on a strict diet, he jogged, he swam and he took sunbaths.

In just three months' time, Thompson lost 30 pounds and reduced his waist by six inches. Svelte and tan, he decided to top it off with a new haircut. Stepping out of the barbershop, he was hit by a bus.

As he lay dying, he cried out, "God, how could you do this to me?" [ba-ba boom]

And a voice from the heavens responded: "To tell you the truth, Thompson, I didn't recognize you."

Stay true.

Just kidding, not over.

Okay, just to get things started and because I am loathe to close these links I already have open. Here are some cool links to get us started on the global warming debate.

First Post

Just recently I watched http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com and I could not stop watching even to eat. I watched it twice. (The second time I ate ice cream.) It was truly eye-opening (the movie, not the ice cream, although it was butter pecan flavored and yummy).... and now it's time for eye-closing. It's 1am here, good evening y'all.
